Some skills and experiences I have gained from my mentorship was the ability to interact with a variety of people. I was able to learn how to effectively communicate with children aged from toddlers to teenagers; also, I was able to interact with parents and help access their needs and questions. I realized that without communication nothing could be done. Diagnoses, clinical tests and patient care would not have been effective in helping the patient without extensive and thorough communication.

This mentorship did not only teach me about how important communication was, but it also taught me more about what it is like to be a physician. I had the opportunity to experience all aspects of the clinical settings which ranged from working with reception and answering phone calls to helping take vitals. I got to witness a glimpse of what it is like to be a receptionist, nurse and a physician. Additionally, this mentorship helped me strengthen my work ethics. I was really pushed to go beyond my limits and really take the initiative as a leader.

Furthermore, this experience has really impacted my life, and opened my eyes to see the things I couldn't see from the standpoint of a patient. Some aspects I would advice future students who wish to participate in this program are to really push yourself way beyond your comfort zone. Sometimes there will be failures, but learning from your mistakes helps you become successful and well- prepared for more opportunities ahead. Also, always take the initiative even when you don't have to.
