My Profile: Hello, my name is Sophi and I am currently a senior of class 2018 at South Forsyth High school. When I was growing up, my dreams and goals had always changed, ranging from being a pop-star to a teacher. However, at a certain point when I had fixed my dream, I wanted to be a doctor who can help and bring smiles to people's faces. An experience that sparked a flame in my heart to pursue the medical career was in the summer of 2015, my freshman year. I had the opportunity to serve the Syrian Refugees in Lebanon. In the camps, I saw how their mental and physical pain were not cared for. After my experience in serving them, I had a dream to go back someday as a doctor to help the Syrian Refugees and to someday bring a smile back on their faces. Also, I love children and working with children so I always wanted to be a doctor that had connection to children.
My Mentorship: I have a mentorship with Dr. Chunduri who is a pediatric doctor at Sunshine Pediatrics. Some of the activities that I do at the clinic ranges from working at reception to working with the doctor and patients. When I work at the front desk, I help with paperwork, phone calls, appointments, and one-to-one communication with patients. However, when I work with the doctor, I get to observe the treatments, consultations, testings, and follow ups that she does. The activities that I do differ on a day-to-day basis.
My future: Next year, I will be going to college; I am not sure yet which specific college I will attend, but hopefully I will be able to go to the colleges that I chose as my top choice. However, the colleges that I applied to all have great medical programs for nursing and pre-med. I will be applying to those programs to start my medical learning process to become a medical professional. When I pursue this career in college, I think that this mentorship will have a great effect on me and my studies. This mentorship has taught me valuable experiences that will surely enrich my studies and knowledge. By the end of my senior year, I will have shadowed my pediatrician for a year; I cannot possibly imagine all the knowledge and experience I would've gained through such a mentorship. I will be able to understand better of what a doctor goes through and does everyday and how office management works. Also, I will be able to better comprehend medical procedures and terminology.
