The official definition of work ethic is a cultural norm that advocates being personally accountable and responsible for the work that one does and is based on a belief that work has intrinsic value. The concept of a work ethic can be applied to any aspect in life whether that may be school, work, sports, play and can even be a certain characteristic of a person. People with a good work ethic are correlated to be hard workers and people who do a good job in the things that they do. To measure work ethic, a tool has been developed: Occupational Work Ethic Inventory (OWEI). This tool provides scores and outcomes for each skill: Interpersonal (communication), Initiative (Taking action), and Being Dependable (reliability). Also, this tool allows you to determine how you rate on the important areas for future information.
When I took this test, I was very shocked with my results. I learned that I am slightly more well rounded in my scores; they are all similar in score. I know when to take an initiative and I try to be consistently dependable and reliable for my mentor to trust me with more responsibilities. However, I want to improve my interpersonal skills because it will benefit me throughout all parts of life; I learned that I need to strengthen my communication skills with other people. All in all, I need to keep in mind that when in a professional environment, I must always maintain a balanced and a desired work ethic for my supervisors and co-workers, in order for them to trust me with more work opportunities in the future.
