Communication is an important skill and necessity in the real world and especially in the workplace. Without effective communication, there would be no means of of work or progress done in any part of society; In communication, there are unspoken rules and guidelines that are expected in any kind of situation. In a casual conversation with friends, the conversation is very laid back and casual, because you are comfortable with them and you may even use slang. Friends in return expect a comfortable and friendly atmosphere from you. In conversations with parents, it still may be casual, but there also may be some restrictions on slang, different word choices and mannerisms. However, in workplace settings and job interviews, employers look at a variety of factors in your communication skills: they look for eye contact, tone of voice, the ability to listen and respond, posture, and engagement. Employers expect you to engage and share your ideas, thoughts and ask for clarifications or questions. Communication may not be the only thing the employers looks for in a job interview or work setting, but it is a huge factor to consider, because communication is used in every situation in life.
When starting a mentorship or internship, there are several points to consider when speaking to your mentor:
1) Frequent eye contact and straight posture- Supervisors may feel a sense of laziness or disrespect when you do not give them your full attention or when you slouch and show a sense of laziness.
2) Ask for clarifications and questions efficiently- Always be efficient and wise about the questions that you may ask. Do not wait till the last minute to ask questions or for clarifications when it is already too late.
3) Share you ideas and concerns- Do not stay mute and not input your ideas in a collaborative discussion. The supervisor desires your input and ideas to improve and build upon different opinions.
